FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FAQ

License activation requires an internet connection.

Please be sure to check that it works with the trial version first. About the trial

Purchase & license

Is there a trial? How long, and what's limited?

Yes, 14 days. Get a free trial key and enter it in the app. One trial key per customer.

  • Everything works during the trial except the Production add-on (Nuke / DaVinci Resolve / After Effects integration and X-OCN on Mac).
  • After 14 days the main features stop. Enter a paid license key to carry on where you left off.
  • Trial keys expire on schedule even without an internet connection.

How many computers and users?

The standard edition is a single-user license: one user on up to 3 of their own computers — not three people with one computer each.

Each person needs their own license, even within the same company. To share computers among several people, choose the group edition (a multi-user license).

How do I move to another computer?

  1. On the current computer, open License > License Activation... in the menu and click "Deactivate this device" (if you also have the add-on, choose which to deactivate).
  2. Install ShotList2 on the new computer and activate with the same key.

If the old computer is broken, you can deactivate it from the customer portal (coming soon).

How do I activate my license?

  1. Start checkout from the purchase screen in the app; Polar's page opens in your browser.
  2. After checkout, your license key is shown in the browser (it is not sent by email).
  3. Copy the key and come back to the app — it is filled in automatically. Then activate.

If you closed the browser, find the key via "Manage Your License" in the app (sign in with a code sent to your email) or from "Access purchase" in the email you receive after purchase.

The trial works the same way: enter your email address and the trial key is shown in the browser (no credit card required).

Activation talks only to api.polar.sh (Polar, our payment provider). If it fails on a company network, see "I can't activate".

How do renewal and cancellation work? What happens at expiry?

  • At the end of each period the subscription renews automatically for the same period and you are charged.
  • Cancel before the next renewal date in the customer portal (coming soon).
  • After cancelling, you can keep using it until the end of the paid period.

Does it work offline? For how long?

Yes. Importing, playback and export all work offline; the internet is only used to check the license.

You can stay offline for 20 days after the last successful license check. After that, a license check screen appears — connect to the internet to continue.

Before a long offline shoot, launch the app once while connected.

Payment methods, invoices and receipts?

Sales and payments are handled by Polar as Merchant of Record, including invoices, receipts and taxes. Your card statement may show Polar's name.

Do you issue qualified invoices (Japan's invoice system)?

Purchases go through an overseas payment provider (Merchant of Record), so we cannot issue qualified invoices under Japan's invoice system.

For paying the group edition by invoice, please contact us.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds follow Polar's refund policy. Please use the trial to check that ShotList2 works with your footage and setup before buying, and contact us with any questions.

I lost my license key

Find it in the customer portal (coming soon). Enter the email you purchased with and sign in with the code you receive.

The group edition can't be bought inside the app. Use "Buy the group edition" under Pricing.

What is the Production add-on?

An extra subscription, at the same price as the app, that connects ShotList2 to post-production tools.

  • Nuke / NukeStudio / Hiero: copy clips as Read nodes, import timelines
  • DaVinci Resolve Studio: send clips to a bin, import timelines
  • After Effects: send footage, import compositions
  • Mac: Sony X-OCN thumbnails and playback

It works only while a paid app license is active. The standard add-on is free for the first 14 days (the group add-on has no free period).

Are the Microsoft Store and Mac versions different?

Both activate with the same Polar license key and start with a trial key. Feature differences come mainly from the OS (see ProRes RAW and X-OCN).

Requirements & install

What are the system requirements?

OSRequirementDisk space
WindowsWindows 10 / 11 (64-bit, x64)about 800MB
MacmacOS 15 or later, Apple silicon (M1 or later) onlyabout 380MB

No GPU is required. With a GPU, these run faster on it:

  • Playback display and color transforms (ACES output transform, HDR output; EXR, DNG and ProRes RAW are transformed on the GPU in half precision)
  • RED debayering (OpenCL)
  • ARRIRAW / ARRICORE debayering (CUDA on Windows, Metal on Mac)

Does it run on Windows on ARM (Snapdragon etc.)?

No. Please use x64 Windows.

Does it run on Intel Macs?

The Mac version on sale is for Apple silicon (M1 or later) Macs only. Intel Macs are not supported.

How do I update?

The Microsoft Store version is updated automatically by the Store. For the Mac version, see the Download section.

Can I switch between Japanese and English?

Yes. Choose AUTO / 日本語 / English under Language in Settings. The change applies after restarting the app.

Is my footage or file names sent anywhere?

No footage, file names or metadata are sent. Only what the license check needs:

  • your license key
  • the seller's identifier
  • the device type ("ShotList2 Desktop (Windows)" / "(macOS)" — nothing that identifies you)
  • the app version

The app checks at launch and every 2 days while running (every 3 hours during the trial), and only with Polar (api.polar.sh). See our privacy policy.

Import & formats

Which files can it import?

TypeFormats
MoviesMOV / MP4 / MXF / AVI / APV (ProRes, H.264, HEVC, XAVC, DNxHD and more)
Camera RAWRED R3D, Nikon N-RAW, Blackmagic RAW, ARRIRAW / ARRICORE / HDE, Phantom Cine, ProRes RAW, Sony X-OCN (with conditions)
Stills & sequencesDPX / EXR / TIFF / DNG / CinemaDNG / JPEG / PNG and more

Image sequences can be listed as one row per sequence or one row per file.

Do I need other software for BRAW / R3D / ARRI?

No. The vendors' SDKs are bundled (including Codex HDE for ARRI HDE). The exceptions are ProRes RAW on Windows and X-OCN on Mac.

How do I read ProRes RAW on Windows?

Install Apple's free "Apple ProRes RAW for Windows". You get correct color and 3–6× faster reading.

Apple's license doesn't allow us to bundle it. Without it, files still open but look dark and greenish.

Can it read Sony X-OCN?

  • Only on Mac with the Production add-on: with the free "nablet X-OCN Media Extension" and "Apple Pro Video Formats" also installed, you get thumbnails, preview and playback (no audio).
  • Mac without the add-on: metadata only.
  • Windows: metadata only.

Does it work with NAS, network drives and large volumes of footage?

Yes. Import runs in parallel.

Playback over a network is limited by its speed — for example, ProRes 4444 XQ plays at about 5fps over 100Mbps. Copy clips to a local drive for close review.

If media moves, relink to reload it while keeping your rows (comments and so on).

How is color (ACES, Log) handled? What if it looks wrong?

Display uses ACES 1.3 / 2.0 (2.0 by default). Camera Log is detected automatically from metadata.

If the detection is wrong, right-click the row to set the color space. Right-click "Reset Color Space to Project Setting" returns to automatic detection.

Color space settings come in two kinds:

  • Built from the manufacturer's official transforms or published formulas: ARRI, RED, Sony, Canon, Panasonic, FUJIFILM (F-Log / F-Log2 / F-Log2 C), DJI (D-Log2), GoPro (GP-Log2), Insta360 (I-Log) and more
  • In-house analysis: for Logs without a published specification, we provide settings measured from color charts shot on the camera. Example: GoPro GP-Log (HERO12 / 13) — the published curve plus color and exposure correction derived from a chart shot on a HERO12 Black

DJI D-Log M is not supported. The original DJI D-Log is available only with ACES 2.0.

Export & save

What's the difference between the three xlsx modes?

ModeImagesBest for
SheetsIn cells when opened in Google SheetsSharing on Google Drive
ExcelIn cellsViewing in Microsoft 365 Excel
CompatibleFloating over cellsOlder versions of Excel

My xlsx is too big to open

Choose how to split the export: No split (1 sheet) / Split sheets / Split workbook (by rows) / Split workbook (by size).

"Split workbook (by size)" creates a new workbook every 90MB by default, to stay under the roughly 100MB limit for opening in Excel for the web or Google Sheets.

Can I change columns or export only images?

  • Choose, reorder and save column presets.
  • Export just the thumbnails as No._FileName.jpg into a dated folder.

Can I save my work and continue later?

Save a .shotlist project with thumbnails included. It opens without the media, so you can review, edit and export xlsx anywhere.

Projects move between Windows and Mac — import on Windows, finish on Mac, or the other way round.

Integrations (Production add-on)

How do I use DaVinci Resolve integration?

DaVinci Resolve Studio (paid) is required; the free DaVinci Resolve is not supported.

In Resolve's preferences, set "External scripting using" to Local.

How do I use Nuke integration?

Copy clips as Read nodes and paste them into Nuke. You can also import Nuke (.nk) and NukeStudio / Hiero timelines into ShotList2.

HEVC, R3D NE, N-RAW, Phantom Cine and some others can't be read by Nuke itself, so their Read nodes won't show a picture.

How do I use After Effects integration?

Send selected clips to After Effects, or import an After Effects composition into ShotList2.

Troubleshooting

I can't activate (company network)

  1. On the license (or purchase) screen, open "Connection check..." and click "Copy result".
  2. On a company network, ask your administrator to:
    • allow api.polar.sh by domain name
    • exclude api.polar.sh from SSL inspection
  3. If it still fails, contact us with the "Connection check" result.

PAC files and NTLM proxies are not supported. When the server is busy the app waits and retries automatically. When many people activate at once, leave about 3 seconds between each.

The app crashed / won't start

After a crash a log (shotlist_crash.log) is kept and the next launch tells you the app didn't close normally.

When contacting us, please include that log, the footage type (camera, format) and your OS version.

No RAW thumbnails in Windows File Explorer

  • File Explorer thumbnails are available on Windows 11.
  • Thumbnails are not created for media on a network (NAS, shared folders).

No RAW thumbnails in Finder / Quick Look on Mac

Right after replacing the app, macOS may still hold old information. Log out or restart your Mac.

I can't drag and drop from File Explorer (Windows)

If ShotList2 was started with "Run as administrator", Windows may block drag and drop from File Explorer (which runs with normal rights).

Close it and start it normally from the Start menu or desktop icon.

What should I send when contacting support?

  • OS and version (e.g. Windows 11 23H2 / macOS 15.5)
  • ShotList2 version
  • What happened and what you did just before
  • Footage type (camera, format, location: internal / external / NAS)
  • For activation problems, the "Connection check" result; for crashes, shotlist_crash.log

Please don't send the license key itself.
