Import
How to import
Drag and drop
Drag and drop media files or folders onto the window. You can drop several at once, and importing starts right away.
- Folders are searched including their subfolders.
- Dropping a file imports only that file. Dropping one frame of an image sequence imports the whole sequence.
- Unsupported file types are skipped (Supported formats).
- Dropping a
.shotlistfile opens it as a project.
If a list is already open, you are asked "Start a new project, or add to the current project?". Added rows continue numbering from the current last number.
On Windows, if ShotList2 is started with "Run as administrator", Windows blocks drag and drop. Start it normally.
"Browse..." and "Import"
- Choose a folder with "Browse..." (or type the path in the field).
- Click "Import".
While importing, "Import" turns into "Cancel". Rows imported so far are kept if you cancel. When done, "Import finished: n items (n errors, n s)" appears.
If a list is already open and you choose another folder with "Browse...", it does not import — it changes the location of the media folder instead. To import something new, empty the list with "Clear" or use drag and drop.
Import presets
"Import preset:" chooses which columns are shown. The change applies right away.
| Preset | Contents |
|---|---|
| Default (simple-A) | The default after a fresh install |
| Cinema Camera - Basic | The basic columns for camera media |
| Cinema Camera - Thumbnails 3 (S/C/E) | Three thumbnails: start, center and end |
| Cinema Camera - Thumbnail Center + XXH64BE | With an XXH64BE checksum |
| simple-B / simple-C(with hash) | Simple column sets (C includes checksums) |
| Open EXR | With the EXR check columns (Editing the list) |
- Built-in presets marked 🔒 cannot be overwritten.
- If you change columns by hand, "*Unsaved (based on: …)" appears. "Save..." saves it under a name.
- If you switch presets with a list open, existing rows are kept and newly added columns are empty (import again to fill them).
The button row
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| "Clear" | Clears the list |
| "Renumber" | Numbers the rows 1, 2, 3… in the current order (including rows hidden by a filter) |
| "Regenerate Thumbnails Only" | Rebuilds only the thumbnails with the current settings (size, brightness, color). Comments, No. and chosen frames are kept |
| "Refetch All but Thumbnails" | Reads only the metadata columns again (codec, resolution, TC, checksums, etc.) |
| "Diff Update" | Rescans the same folders and adds only the media that is not in the list yet (below) |
To rebuild only the thumbnails of selected rows, right-click → "Regenerate Thumbnails Only (Selected Rows)". When you change thumbnail-related settings, the app asks whether to rebuild them.
Diff Update (when media is added during a shoot)
Use it when more clips have been added to a card during a shoot.
- Click "Diff Update".
- The imported folders are rescanned and only clips not yet in the list are added. Existing rows (comments and stars) stay as they are.
- After adding, the rows are renumbered.
Where they are added is set in Settings → "General" → "Add position:". The default, "Ask each time", lets you choose "Add to the end of the list" or "Add to the end of each relpath group".
Diff Update is not available for a list imported from several folders. Drag and drop the extra media and choose "Add to Current Project" instead.
Image sequences
Stills in the same folder whose names share the same beginning and end with only a running number in between become one row, shown as name.start-end.ext.
- Numbers with huge gaps (like stock photo IDs) are not treated as a sequence; each image is its own row.
- Settings → "Import" → "Image Sequences" has:
- "do not group image sequences (one row per file)" (off by default)
- "Exclude image files that are not part of a sequence" (on by default)
- "default fps for image sequences (when the header has none)" (30 by default)
By default, single stills that are not part of a sequence (JPEG, PNG, etc.) are not listed. To list single images too, turn off "Exclude image files that are not part of a sequence".
Cut detection (split a video into cuts)
Splits an edited video into one row per cut.
- Right-click a video row → "Split by Cut Detection (TransNetV2)...".
- Confirm, and every frame of the video is analyzed (longer videos take longer).
- The row is replaced by one row per cut, named like
original name [cut 1/12].
- No. keeps its original value. Click "Renumber" if needed.
- Scene / Cut / Take / Comment are copied to every cut.
- Adjust the sensitivity in Settings → "Cut Detection" with "Threshold:" (default 0.25) and "Min cut length (s):" (default 0.3).
- Not available for image sequences, stills, or rows that are already split.
